Current Trends in the Electric Car Battery Industry

Currently, the lithium-ion battery is the main trend in the industry.  Many of the big electric cars in terms of overall ability are cars that use the lithium-ion battery.  This is not to say that there are no other battery designs out there, but rather that the lithium-ion electric car battery appears to be the most popular at the current moment in time.

It is certainly the most popular battery over at Tesla Motors.  Tesla Motors is easily one of the most famous if not the most famous electric car company.  They build electric cars that are not only zero emission cars that are totally environmentally friendly, but they are also interested in the propagation of car designs that are extremely sleek and sexy. That is why they continue to gain popularity in a large way.

Their big ticket item at the moment is the Tesla Roadster.  It is a lithium-ion design and is able to reach over 200 miles in a single battery charge.  At the same time, it can achieve a cruising speed of over 200 mph and has the ability to accelerate from standstill all the way up to 60 mph in four seconds.  Even by the modern standards of cars, that is ridiculous.

The next challenge for the electric car battery is becoming lightweight.  That will help immensely in lowering the cost of electric vehicles as well as allowing them to be more efficient and travel farther on a single charge.  When that innovation will actually come around is anybody’s guess.
